Economists estimate that achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6 (universal access to safe water and sanitation) by 2030 will require investments of at least $114 billion annually, or three times current investment levels. Much of this financing need lies in the development of innovative water and sanitation systems able to withstand the adverse impacts of climate change, which in turn, produces multifaceted benefits for vulnerable communities including decreasing poverty, improving health, increasing gender equality, and ultimately building resilience to climate change.

WaterEquity is launching the WCR I to invest in climate-resilient water supply and sanitation infrastructure in emerging markets, reaching vulnerable populations via a diversified portfolio of projects and growth companies across the water value chain. Priority sectors include bulk water supply, water grid, wastewater treatment, fecal sludge treatment, and water reuse.

• First Close: Q1 2024, Subscription open; Fund investing
• Asset class: Private Equity: Projects and Growth Companies
• Fund size: $200 million final close
• Term: 10-years + two possible 1-year extensions
• Target returns: 10 to 12% net internal rate of return (4-year investment period with possible 1-year extension)
• Catalytic Effect: Equity investments are expected to have a 3x multiplier effect through additional debt financing raised at the project and growth company level
• Geography: Vulnerable countries, especially those with policy and regulatory environments that enable private sector investments. Priority markets include: Bangladesh, Brazil, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Mexico, Peru, Philippines, and South Africa
• Social & Environmental Goals: Reach 15 million people with water and sanitation solutions, and deliver volumetric benefits through investments that improve water quality and mitigate water scarcity
