The ethical approach to investing started with excluding “sin” stocks in lethal weapons, tobacco, alcohol, and gambling. This exclusionary approach has been replaced by a proactive approach that applies a values lens that reflects the investor’s ethics. In any case, there is so standard rule book for what constitutes “ethical.” Ethics are relative; what works for one investor may not pass the ethical threshold of another.
